The Appeal
"Lightweight" is a misnomer. The air-portable Land Rover was only lighter than its civilian counterpart when its body panels, doors, and roof were removed during transportation. The important point was that the Lightweight was four inches narrower, so it would fit two-abreast in transport planes and onto standard pallets.
For those for whom even a standard Series Land Rover is a rifle too luxurious and complex, an ex-military lightweight offers a level of simplicity that's impossible to equal. These characterful cars are useful to have around, not to mention enormous fun.
This 1983 Series III example looks to be in good condition for a vehicle of this nature. It comes with a canvas tilt, ideal for summer, while the bodywork appears commendably straight for a Land Rover of this vintage. MOT and road tax exempt, this is a great car.
