The Appeal
The closest interpretation of the silhouette sketched by Maurice Wilkes in the sands of Red Wharf Bay, 80-inch Series I is where the Land Rover legend began, and the early 'lights through the grill' models produced between 1948 and 1951 are among the most coveted of all. With their distinctive headlamp positioning within the front grille, these earliest examples represent the very genesis of one of the most iconic utility vehicles ever made.
This 1950 example benefits from a new galvanised chassis from Richards, while the original engine was entrusted to Stanhope for its refurbishment. The original gearbox has been retained, and the axles are date-correct for 1950, refurbished with period-appropriate knuckle joints at the front. New electrics, brakes, clutch, and suspension were all fitted, and a Fairey overdrive unit has been added for improved usability on modern roads.
Around 4,500 miles have been covered since the rebuild. The vendor describes it as noisy, bumpy, very cool, and the best fun to drive — everything an early Land Rover should be.
