The Appeal
For all their charm, Series Land Rovers aren't what you'd call 'comfortable', and that was largely due to their suspension. Leaf springs are tough and effective under heavy loads, but they're not the most pliable. That's why the Ninety and One Ten models, introduced in 1983, used a revised coil-spring system while retaining live beam axles. Land Rover has stuck with this formula ever since, which tells you all you need to know...
This petrol-engined short-wheelbase 1982 Series III, affectionately known as 'Murray', has been in the current owner's care since 2001. Its earlier life was spent in the service of Midland Bank, tasked with towing their portable bank to country shows. It has been carefully stored throughout, first in a climate-controlled barn near Bosham in West Sussex, and later in a large barn in Wales.
Significant mechanical and structural work has been carried out over the years, as outlined in The Detail section below. Most notably, the car's most corrosion-prone components (the steel chassis, bulkhead, and radiator panel) have been substituted for galvanised items, making this a classic highly resistant to the elements. It also has disc brakes and a thrifty LPG conversion.
The vendor states it drives nicely, is light to steer, and looks very smart, particularly with the hood down.
