The Appeal
With a production run spanning eighteen years, the R107 Mercedes-Benz SL is one of the most enduring grand tourers of the 20th century. The lesser-seen 450SL, powered by Mercedes' smooth 4.5-litre V8, is arguably the pick of the bunch, and this 1980 example is a very late production car registered during the final year of 450SL manufacture.
Finished in its original Silver Blue Metallic with a contrasting Lapis Blue Metallic hard top: a striking factory combination, this two-seater is trimmed in grey chequered cloth and retains its original interior, which the vendor reports presents very well. The warranted 32,661 miles are substantiated by an unbroken chain of MOT certificates and Mercedes-Benz service stamps stretching back to the car's first inspection service at 3,640 miles in August 1980. Before the current keeper acquired it in April 2023 as a non-runner, the car spent 35 years in one family's ownership (passing from father to daughter); the car was enjoyed by the family for many years before coming off the road and spending 22 years in dry storage.
Since purchase, the car has been comprehensively recommissioned with mechanical and cosmetic work carried out, as detailed below. The car comes with its original book pack, hard top, tool kit, two keys including the master, and the desirable registration '9463 PE', which has been on the car since 1989.
