The Appeal
1971 was an important year in the 911 story. It was to be the final year of the 2.2-litre engine in the long-wheelbase chassis, a combination that many air-cooled enthusiasts regard as one of the most engaging to drive. As the entry point to the 911 range, the T offered a lighter, more playful character than its S and E siblings, and today these cars are increasingly prized for their purity and usability.
This Burgundy example was imported from the USA in 2003 and has been on UK plates since. It was stripped to bare metal and repainted in its original colour by a previous long-term owner. The current owner, who has owned around a dozen early 911s over the past 25 years, purchased the car in early 2024 and has since gone through it thoroughly. Brakes, steering tie rods, fuel hoses, electrics and the engine have all received attention, while sympathetic period-style interior trim, including BF Torino reclining seats, RS-style lightweight door cards and a Nardi steering wheel, has refreshed the cabin. The engine, rebuilt in the mid-1980s with fewer than 25,000 miles covered since, is reported to start instantly and settle to an even idle. The main cosmetic shortcoming is micro-blistering in the paintwork caused by moisture during the respray, though this is said to be invisible from a few feet away.
A box file of invoices dating back to the late 1970s accompanies the car, adding welcome provenance to what the vendor describes as a very honest example.
