Description
A particularly well-presented example of the first-generation Porsche 997, combining timeless 911 styling with a naturally aspirated flat-six engine and the everyday usability of the Tiptronic S transmission.
Paint
The metallic-grey paintwork presents exceptionally well across the car, displaying a deep and consistent gloss.
Only one small stone chip on the bonnet was specifically identified during our visit. There may naturally be occasional tiny marks elsewhere consistent with the age and mileage, but no widespread deterioration or significant paint defects were apparent during our visit.
The bumpers, mirror housings, door handles and side skirts all appear to match the surrounding panels well.
The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.
Bodywork
The bodywork presents to a particularly high standard, retaining the beautifully balanced proportions that make the 997 one of the most admired modern 911 generations.
The panels appear straight, with consistent-looking gaps around the bonnet, doors and rear engine cover. We did not notice any significant dents, distortions or obvious areas of previous damage during our visit.
The doors open and close correctly, while the frameless windows perform their normal drop-and-rise movement when the doors are operated.
The rear spoiler was photographed in its raised position and appears clean and complete.
Overall, the bodywork gives the impression of a carefully used and properly looked-after example.
We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.
Dashboard
The 997 dashboard combines the traditional five-dial Porsche instrument layout with a more modern centre console and climate-control system.
The large central rev counter remains the focal point, flanked by the speedometer and supporting gauges for fuel level, oil pressure, oil temperature and coolant temperature.
The odometer displayed approximately 87,483 miles during our visit.
The dashboard and its stitched trim present very well. Importantly, the buttons and switches do not suffer from the unpleasant sticky surface that can sometimes develop on interior components from this period.
The factory infotainment unit has been replaced with a Pioneer touchscreen system incorporating Apple CarPlay and iPod connectivity. This is a worthwhile usability improvement, providing modern navigation, telephone and audio functions while fitting neatly into the original centre console.
The automatic climate controls and surrounding switches also appear clean and well preserved.
The drive
The 997 Carrera succeeds in combining a genuine sports-car driving experience with a level of comfort and refinement that makes substantial journeys entirely realistic.
The engine started cleanly from cold and produced no visible exhaust smoke. Once underway, it accelerated strongly and delivered the distinctive sound and response expected from a naturally aspirated Porsche flat-six.
The Tiptronic S gearbox is particularly well suited to relaxed touring. In automatic mode, it allows the car to make smooth and effortless progress, while the manual facility provides greater driver involvement on quieter or more demanding roads.
During our on the road section, the transmission changed smoothly in both modes. The steering felt reassuringly direct, and the suspension remained controlled and free from unwanted noises.
At approximately 70mph, the Porsche cruised calmly, with its engine, transmission and chassis all behaving as expected. No warning lights were displayed on the instrument panel.
Andrew’s 17-night journey through France, Switzerland and Italy demonstrates the breadth of the 997’s abilities. Although it offers the compact dimensions, performance and rear-engined character expected from a 911, it is also sufficiently comfortable and practical for extended touring.
Andrew reports that the car completed the European journey without letting him down and has remained dependable throughout his ownership.
Glass and trim
The windscreen and remaining exterior glass present well. No notable chips were identified in the windscreen, while the side and rear glass appeared clear.
The electrically operated tilt-and-slide sunroof worked correctly during our visit.
The headlamp units are complete and generally presentable, although the lenses could potentially benefit from further polishing to improve their clarity.
The front indicator and lower light units appear free from significant damage. At the rear, the light units also present well, although a small amount of condensation was noted inside one rear lamp during our visit.
The Porsche badging, Carrera script, window trim, engine-cover grille and twin exhaust finishers all appear complete and in good condition.
Please view the photos and video below to review the condition of the glass and trim for yourself.
Wheels and tyres
The Porsche is fitted with a set of attractive five-spoke alloy wheels, finished in silver and carrying Porsche-crested centre caps.
Three of the wheels appeared particularly well presented during our visit. The appraisal video identifies a small chip and several light marks around the edge of one wheel, although these are relatively localised and do not significantly detract from the car’s appearance.
The tyres appear to retain a suitable level of tread and looked presentable across the car.
Please take time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels, and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn, or over 10 years old.
Seats and carpets
The front seats are upholstered in perforated black leather and remain in very good condition.
Both seats retain their shape and support, with no significant issues or heavy bolster deterioration apparent. The leather has developed only a light patina consistent with careful use.
The compact rear seats are trimmed to match and provide useful occasional accommodation or additional luggage space.
The black carpeting presents cleanly throughout the cabin, including the footwells and rear seating area. Porsche-branded carpet mats are fitted and appear to have protected the underlying material effectively.
The door cards are also in good overall condition. A small amount of light scuffing was identified, but it is minor and consistent with normal entry and exit from the car.
The dark headlining presents especially well, without any obvious sagging or significant marks.
Please take a look at the photos and video below to decide on the condition of the seats and carpets for yourself.
Engine and gearbox
The Carrera is powered by a 3,596cc water-cooled flat-six engine, mounted behind the rear axle and driving the rear wheels.
In original specification, this engine produced 325PS and 370Nm of torque, giving the Carrera strong performance without sacrificing its ability to cover longer distances in comfort.
The engine was started from cold during our visit. It fired readily and settled into a consistent idle, with no visible smoke from the exhausts and no unwanted mechanical noises reported.
Once on the road, the engine pulled strongly and cleanly. Its response felt progressive, while the familiar flat-six note became increasingly purposeful as the revs rose.
The engine compartment presents very well, appearing clean and appropriately maintained without being unnecessarily dressed. The air-intake system, fluid reservoirs and surrounding components appear complete and orderly.
Power is transmitted through the five-speed Tiptronic S automatic gearbox. In normal use, the transmission changed ratios smoothly and unobtrusively.
Its manual facility was also demonstrated during the drive out. The gearbox moved cleanly through its ratios under acceleration and allowed the driver to maintain power without lifting from the accelerator between changes. If the manual controls are left unused, the system returns to automatic operation.
No unwanted noises, harsh changes or other concerns were noticed from the engine or transmission during our drive.
Electrics and other
The Porsche’s electrical equipment includes its tilt-and-slide sunroof, electric windows, climate control, heated seats and upgraded Pioneer infotainment system.
The sunroof operated correctly during our visit, while the windows performed their normal automatic drop-and-rise movement when the doors were opened and closed.
The Pioneer touchscreen system adds Apple CarPlay connectivity, allowing compatible telephones to provide navigation, music and hands-free calling functions.
The instruments and warning lights performed their usual checks at start-up. Once the engine was running, no warning lights remained illuminated.
The automatically deploying rear spoiler was also photographed in its raised position and appeared to function as intended.
No specific electrical faults were reported by Andrew during our visit.
History and paperwork
Andrew purchased the car approximately two years ago after spending more than six months looking for a suitable 911.
During his ownership, the Carrera has completed a memorable 17-night European road trip. The journey took Andrew through France and Switzerland before continuing into Italy, including Tuscany and Sorrento.
A main service was completed during the previous year. Shortly before our visit, the car underwent a further intermediate service and MOT, including replacement engine oil and filters. Andrew reports that it now has a fresh MOT and is ready to be enjoyed.
The car is now being offered for sale after approximately two years of enjoyable ownership. This represents an appealing opportunity to acquire a handsome and carefully maintained 997.1 Carrera with desirable touring equipment, recent servicing and proven long-distance ability.
The registration P44 OOR is included in the sale.
We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.
We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.
If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
Suspension and brakes
Andrew describes the steering as solid and accurate, saying that the car feels as though it drives on rails.
That description was supported during our on the road section. The steering responded consistently and gave the car a precise, planted feel without any obvious looseness or unwanted movement.
The suspension also felt tight and well controlled. The Porsche remained composed across the roads used during filming, with no rattles, bangs or concerning suspension noises apparent from inside the cabin.
The ventilated and cross-drilled brake discs are visible through the open five-spoke wheels, accompanied by Porsche-branded calipers.
The brakes performed as expected during our drive and no concerns were raised regarding their operation.
Overall, the steering, suspension and braking systems contributed to the impression of a carefully maintained and well-sorted 911.
Steering wheel gear stick
The three-spoke leather steering wheel incorporates Porsche’s Tiptronic controls, allowing the driver to change gear manually without removing either hand from the wheel.
The leather remains in good condition, showing only the light sheen and age-related wear. The Porsche crest and silver trim sections also present well.
The handbrake, gear-selector surround and remaining centre-console trim all present neatly.
