Description

A smooth Italian design, powered by a burbling British V8, wrapped under a uniquely charming T-bar roof.

Paint

The car was repainted in its original Triumph White, which we are told looked great until it micro-blistered. Since then, the doors, bonnet and boot have been sanded back to primer, removing the blistering, and then repainted, but unfortunately in a slightly different shade.

The images are taken from a range of angles to show the car as you would see it in person, so please take the time to fully assess the high-resolution photos and videos before forming your own opinion of the paintwork.

Bodywork

Overall, the bodywork appears to be in good condition, with no visible signs of blistering or corrosion, as these issues were tackled during the restoration. The panels appear to align well; there may be some adjustment needed to the door once the door striker pins are refitted.

We’ve highlighted our observations in more detail through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take the time to review all media files to assess the car’s condition for yourself.

Dashboard

The black dashboard is free from any splits or cracks. The wooden fascia has discoloured slightly with age but is an easy item to re-finish or replace.

All the instruments appear to be in good order. We didn't run the car long enough to check everything worked, but Paul tells us everything was working when the car was last used.

The odometer shows approximately 68,890 miles.

The drive

A quintessential British classic dominated by the rich, burbling exhaust note of its 3.0-litre V8 engine. Once this project is complete, you'll get smooth power delivery and a relaxed suspension.

The Stag is a fantastic open-top cruiser that excels in comfort and is perfectly suited to sweeping country roads on a sunny day.

Glass and trim

The windows are in good condition, with only light age-related marks. Paul tells us all the bits of trim are in storage and just need refitting. We did see some odd bits of trim and the new stainless steel bumpers, which were all in very good condition.

Although not fitted, the front and rear lights are included and are in good order, with no signs of damage to the lenses.

The fabric roof has been replaced and is in good condition, and the rear window unzips as it should.

Please view the photos and video below to review the condition of the glass and trim for yourself.

Wheels and tyres

The original wheels and British Leyland trims appear in good order, with just a few age-related marks to the trims. The tyres are a matching set of Uniroyal RainMax 3s, in new condition, as they haven't been used since fitting.

Please take the time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels and tyres, so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn or over 10 years old.

Seats and carpets

Paul has retrimmed the Stag's seats in brown vinyl to match the original specification. These are in very good condition, although, after sitting for a couple of years, they would benefit from a deep clean. The door panels are new and in good order.

The carpets were also replaced, so these are in good order with no signs of age.

Engine and gearbox

Paul fully rebuilt the 3.0-litre engine during the restoration. It's also been fitted with a larger radiator and electronic ignition, helping to reduce the well-known overheating problems and making starting easier, as you can see in our mechanical review video.

Reported by Paul, the four-speed gearbox has nice changes, and the overdrive works correctly.

Electrics and other

We are told that, before being stripped down, there were some light signs of age to the switchgear, but everything in the Stag was working as it should.

History and paperwork

Not really one for keeping hold of receipts, the only paperwork Paul has for the Stag is a list of part numbers for items ordered during the restoration.

This is one of those projects that looks worse than it actually is. Paul says, “With a good weekend's work, you could have the car back together in a usable condition.”

What are you waiting for? A nice winter project to get repainted and put back together, with plenty of time to get it finished in time for summer touring.

We’ve carried out our usual seller checks, including photo ID and V5 verification, as well as a history check on the vehicle. This is a professional HPI check that will highlight if the car has previously been stolen, recorded as being involved in an accident or has any outstanding finance. Please note that this does not include a mileage history check.

We’ve summarised our own view of the car based on information provided by the seller; however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video each car in high-resolution detail so you can make your own assessment from the comfort of your home. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time reviewing everything in this listing.

Viewings are also welcomed on all our listings. Please get in touch to arrange a suitable time; we just need to speak to you first and receive valid photo ID before confirming.

If there’s anything you’re unsure about, no matter how small, please ask the owner in the comments section before placing your bids, as bids cannot be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car, just like at a traditional auction house.

Suspension and brakes

All of the suspension components were refreshed during the restoration, and new bushes were fitted, which Paul tells us have massively improved the handling of the '70s classic.

Although the brakes have been overhauled, the car has been standing for some time: we would therefore recommend that a competent person give them a once-over before use.

Steering wheel gear stick

The original three-spoke steering wheel is in very good condition, with just some light age-related signs of wear.

The gear knob is in good order, with an overdrive switch that is working correctly.
