The Appeal
Thank goodness for car engineers who love their work, because without them, there would be no Z3M. Underwhelmed by the standard Z3 roadster, Dr Burkhard Goschel, BMW’s Head of Special Model Series Development, led a team working at night and weekends to create the brilliant M Coupé. Rather than relying on computers, they went old school, forming the car using foil, wood, foam and plastic. The superlative Z3M is the ultimate skunkworks car.
What makes the Z3M so good is the engineering, notably the chassis, which is three times stiffer than the Z3 Roadster, but also how it liberally borrows from the glistening BMW parts bin. Hence, in this early car, the 3.2L 321bhp S50 straight six from the E36 M3 lies beneath the retro-themed bonnet.
Just 6,291 Z3M Coupés were built worldwide, of which only 989 were RHD versions like this car. The styling was initially divisive, but is now intrinsic to the car’s appeal, giving buyers one of the most distinctive and capable coupés of the last 30 years.
This silver 2000 car arrives in good order and is pleasingly original, including the five-spoke shadowline alloys and BMW Business radio. The structural and mechanical condition is verified by the lengthy MOT, which shows no advisories.
Few modern BMWs feel like nailed-on classics quite like the Z3M Coupé . They are rare arrivals for sale so this is one not to miss.
