The Appeal
The Austin Healey 3000 is an archetypal British sports car from the 1960s. Such is its reputation, allure and desirability that prices have skyrocketed in recent years, putting them out of reach for many an aspiring owner. When this happens, as is often the case, an opportunity arises for the enterprising tribute or evocation manufacturer to step in.
That’s exactly what Woodley Healey of Cape Town, South Africa did in the case of the Healey 3000.
Woodley manufactures bespoke and high-quality evocations of the Big Healey. They utilise modern materials and mechanical systems to give their cars modern world usability combined with performance and ease of maintenance and repair. All at a fraction of the purchase cost of the real thing. An irresistible combination.
The History & Paperwork
- This Healey evocation is fully UK registered
- It was thought to have been built by Exo Sports Cars of Newark from parts supplied by Woodley including a high quality fibreglass body
- It was first registered in the UK in February 2018
- Two previous keepers enjoyed the car’s charms between then and 2020
- In December 2020 the current owner acquired it to become just the third keeper
- The Woodley Healey has been very lightly used since then
- The V5 Registration Document is available
- Previous MOTs from 2021 and 2022 are available on the Government portal
The Condition
- This Woodley Healey evokes a good level of authenticity when compared to the original
- It presents in Healey typical red and white two-tone livery
- The car is complete with authentic-looking Austin Healey badging
- The condition of the paintwork looks good with a smooth and thick-looking finish evident
- Some panel gaps appear a little inconsistent in places
- Other key features include the black fabric hood
- This appears unblemished and fits appropriately tightly
- Other period cues include the cross-spoke wire wheels
- These are affixed with twin-eared central spinners
- The wheels themselves exhibit some loss of chrome in places
- Where this has happened some surface corrosion is noted
- A matching set of Roadstone, radial-type tyres are fitted
- The sports-oriented cabin is brightly trimmed in hues of red
- The period style bucket seats are stitched into diamond-shaped box pleats
- These are accompanied by thick contrasting white piping to the seat extremities
- The carpets appear well fitted and are in a darker shade of red
- The dashboard fascia is also finished in red with period style, ivory coloured gauges
- A wooden rimmed Mota Lita steering wheel is fitted
- This is accompanied by a varnished wooden gear knob and handbrake handle
- The boot is finished in red carpet and is home to the battery and fuel tank
The Mechanics
- This evocation benefits from quality BMW mechanical underpinnings
- 2.5-litre Straight-six BMW M52
- Five-speed ZF manual transmission feeding the rear wheels
- The engine bay is well organised and well presented
- The car requires a new engine management unit (EMU). This unit helps to optimise the ignition, but is not imperative to start the car which has recently been to France and back.
- The underside of the car is home to a ladder-style chassis; there is some surface rust in evidence where the black finish has come away
