The Appeal

The GT6 is one of the most soulful and stylish cars ever to bear the Triumph badge. Manufactured for just seven years, its third and final iteration arrived in late 1970, designed to mirror changes to the contemporaneous Spitfire Mk IV.

This particular GT6 Mk3 is 55 years old, and age had caught up with it a few years ago when its current owner acquired it as a project. Since then, this car has been comprehensively restored from its sills to its paintwork. Attention naturally focused on fully rebuilding the engine, which is described as working well in tandem with the four-speed manual gearbox with its switch-operated overdrive. New bushes and rear leaf springs have been installed where required, and there is a twin exhaust above the original bumper-mounted Triumph badge.

The comprehensive programme of refurbishments goes far beyond mechanical elements. The bodywork has been resprayed in a fetching powder blue shade, the seats were repadded (reusing the original vinyl covers), and new black carpets were installed to complement a replacement headlining. The latter surrounds a period Webasto sunroof which still operates as intended. Other retained period details include a drilled Triumph steering wheel and flying-plughole BL pedals, GT6 rear badging and original Smiths dials within a full-width walnut dashboard.

Although there is little paperwork from before this car’s 2022 reinvention, it will be sold with extensive invoices for parts and upgrades over the last four years. A future owner may want to address pitting across the exterior chromework and imperfections in the paintwork, but this is a comprehensively modernised classic which makes the most of the GT6’s chassis and road manners.
