Description

KEY FACTS

  • This W180-generation Mercedes-Benz 220 S is a charming and elegant late-1950s luxury saloon, representing one of Mercedes-Benz's most recognisable 'Ponton' models and equipped with the rare desirable optional Hydrak semi-automatic transmission.
  • It is powered by a naturally aspirated 2.2-litre inline-six, driving the rear wheels through a four-speed Hydrak semi-automatic transmission.
  • This left-hand drive 200 S was first registered on 2 January 1958 in Austria before later being imported to the United Kingdom, where it was first registered in June 2022.
  • The odometer indicates 50,935 miles, though this is not warranted.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

  • This W180-era 220 S Ponton is finished in its reportedly original blue (350H) hue, over a blue vinyl and grey patterned cloth-trimmed interior, featuring a wood-trimmed dashboard and window surrounds, and chrome trim highlights.
  • It rides on a set of 13-inch steel wheels with body-coloured and chrome hubcaps, fitted with Vredestein Sprint Classic tyres.
  • Equipment includes twin front spotlights, a two-spoke steering wheel, push-out front quarter light windows, front and rear bench seats, VDO gauges, an analogue clock, with its original working Becker Mexico radio, heater and ventilation controls, and front door card storage compartments.
  • Included in the sale is a boxed set of replacement front and rear bumpers.
  • The sale will also include one set of original keys along with the original stamped service book, owner's manual, parts catalogue, a set of original Austrian numberplates, the V5C, the Hydrak maintenance manual and supporting invoices.

CONDITION

  • Please refer to the photo gallery to assess the exterior and interior condition.
  • Specific notes from the seller include: the car was repainted some years ago in its original colour. The older repaint now displays various blemishes, faint paint cracks and areas of bubbling on the bonnet, boot and side panels. The seller also notes more noticeable paint damage on the rear passenger-side wing, the boot seam and the passenger-side door.
  • The interior has previously been reupholstered with replacement seat upholstery and door cards prior to the current ownership. The original headlining shows some discolouration, the wood trim exhibits some fading, and the original rubber floor mats display age-related wear.
  • The car’s last MOT test was conducted on 11 June 2022 at an indicated 50,072 miles, which resulted in a first-time pass with no advisories.

SERVICE HISTORY

  • The seller states that during their ownership, maintenance has included draining and inspecting the fuel tank, fitting a correct OEM brass fuel filter gauze, cleaning the fuel tank vent lines and fuel lines, rebuilding the mechanical fuel pump with a new diaphragm, servicing the fuel filter housing with a replacement cork gasket and filter, cleaning the idle jets, and servicing and tuning the twin Solex carburettors approximately five years ago.
  • The seller states that further maintenance has included replacing various exterior rubber seals, fitting new indicator lenses and seals, replacing lower aluminium body trim, refinishing the upper door trims, fitting new rear door stone guards, replacing the fuel cap lock and seal, fitting new chrome interior door escutcheons, and installing a replacement '220 S' boot badge.

SUMMARY

This W180-generation Mercedes-Benz 220 S Ponton is an appealing example of one of the marque's most elegant post-war saloons, combining understated styling with the smooth and refined character of its 2.2-litre inline-six engine and desirable optional Hydrak transmission. Accompanied by its original manuals, stamped service book and a collection of supporting documentation, it has also reportedly benefited from a variety of sympathetic maintenance and cosmetic improvements during the current ownership. Presenting as an attractive and usable classic with honest age-related cosmetic imperfections disclosed by the seller, it would make an enjoyable addition to any collection of distinguished European classics, equally suited to relaxed weekend drives, classic touring events or local shows.
