The Appeal
The Germans’ late '80s takeover of the executive saloon car market spurred the legacy, non-premium brands into action. The result was cars like this, the brilliant 605 SVE24. That the fightback ultimately failed explains why this car is the undiscovered gem of the late 80s and early 90s executive motoring scene.
To describe this car as rare tends to underplay just how few are left - records indicate it could be the only road-registered one in the UK. What makes the SVE24 so special is how Peugeot reworked the sluggish 3L 12V PRV engine into a responsive, powerful motor - so much so that early cars were manual-only because contemporary gearboxes couldn’t deal with the torque it produced. Then there is the ride and handling - the 605 shares its underpinnings with the XM, so it is as comfortable as a sofa, yet Peugeot’s engineers also tuned it to handle like its smaller hot hatch siblings. The SVE was introduced to trounce BMW, Audi et al in the luxury stakes, including full leather, memory seats and wood veneers.
All of which are strong reasons to give this 605 survivor consideration. It is a low-mileage and low-keeper car in light blue with a full black leather interior. The MOT runs to June 2027 with minor advisories to note, but nothing structural. The condition is usable, with scope to either live with it or improve it. It was recently fitted with new front and rear discs and pads.
This is the sort of ultra-rare car that will appeal to serious saloon car enthusiasts.
