The Appeal
Known colloquially as the "Baby Benz", the W201 was Mercedes' first foray into the compact car segment. The project was overseen by the late great Bruno Sacco, so it's no wonder that the 190e was a great success - a direct rival to BMW's E30 3 Series.
This 1993 example, fitted with the 2.0-litre inline four-cylinder engine and four-speed automatic transmission, carries interesting provenance, having been originally ordered as a dealership display model for Puttock's of Guildford directly from Mercedes. It comes accompanied by a history file and service documents showing the majority of its maintenance was carried out by Mercedes or Mercedes specialists.
The vendor describes it as a clean example with great originality that presents well for its age. Inside, it retains its original Blaupunkt factory cassette radio and period-correct Alpina speakers. Significant recent mechanical work has also been carried out, as detailed below.
The vendor says:
"The vehicle is a stunning example of a Bruno Sacco era Mercedes with great originality. To drive it is lovely and very comfortable and also has some great acceleration. Runs well at high speeds, and the engine doesn't miss a beat. I'll be very sad to see this car go, but needs must."
