Description

An iconic British sports saloon combining lightweight agility with race-proven twin-cam power.

Paint

The Ermine White paintwork exhibits even coverage and a high-quality application with excellent depth and lustre. A few minor cosmetic imperfections are present, including small blemishes on the offside A-pillar, light paint runs on the roof, and minor scuffing near the base of the nearside rear wheel arch. Overall, the standard of finish remains remarkably high.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Bodywork

The body is in exceptional condition, pointing to a past undocumented restoration. All body panels align flush and show no signs of damage, featuring even panel gaps and doors that open and close effortlessly.

The underside is remarkably well preserved, presenting crisp white paintwork throughout. The floor pan, wheel wells, and suspension mounting points remain completely solid, while both the engine bay and trunk floor are presented in spotless condition. The rear setup features the classic Lotus A-frame arrangement to support the trailing arms, complemented by floor-stiffening braces inside the trunk.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Dashboard

The dashboard presents well, showing only a small crack on top of the driver-side padding and light age-related patina on the aluminium fascia trim. All switches and controls remain in excellent order, with every item reported to function correctly.

Additionally, the door cards, headlining, and surrounding cabin trim are in good condition.

The drive

The Lotus Twin Cam engine fitted to the Mk1 Lotus Cortina represents a masterclass in British motorsport engineering, pairing high-volume Ford architecture with bespoke competition head design. Utilising the 1558cc variant derived from the Ford 116E cylinder block, Lotus took raw castings, bored out the cylinder walls, and fitted their own high-flow twin-cam cylinder head along with twin Weber 40 DCOE carburettors. The result was the birth of an iconic engine that redefined performance saloons.

A road test with Mark demonstrated just how authentic this Lotus Cortina feels behind the wheel. The minimal sound deadening and firm suspension tune deliver a delightfully raw, tactile experience akin to a stripped-out, race-prepared car, yet balanced nicely by comfortable, supportive seating.

The car is wonderfully responsive, with the Twin Cam engine pulling smoothly and delivering lively, immediate power with no hesitation. Although high-RPM runs were not conducted during the test drive, slight throttle pressure unleashes a glorious intake roar and offers a compelling taste of the performance available higher in the rev range.

Handling remains superbly controlled, staying completely quiet and free of clunks or knocks over rough surfaces or under hard acceleration.

The steering feels agile and sharp, guiding the car through corners with complete precision. Mark reports no unwanted vibration or kickback under load, with the chassis maintaining confident, predictable grip throughout turns. The car has proven completely reliable in his care, with engine temperatures and oil pressure consistently remaining within optimal ranges.

Glass and trim

The glass, light lenses, and surrounding rubber seals remain in good condition, with only minor surface marks visible on the windscreen.

Exterior trim is fully complete, featuring authentic replica quarter bumpers. While the rear light bezels display slight age-related patina, the overall cosmetic presentation is very positive.

Wheels and tyres

The 13” grey steel paint rims look smart, finished off with a set of clean hubcaps.

The front and rear of the car are fitted with Tracmax tyres and show a spec of 175/65R13 - these are date-coded from 2021. They all have even tread and are in good shape.

Please take time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels, and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn, or over 10 years old.

Seats and carpets

The black vinyl seats remain in excellent condition, providing ample comfort and lateral support.

Complementing the seating, the black rubber flooring is equally well preserved, with no noticeable wear.

Engine and gearbox

The cold start was effortless, with the engine firing right up on full choke and a few throttle pumps. After briefly settling into a steady idle, the Twin Cam found its rhythm, accompanied by its characteristic mechanical valvetrain ticking and a few light pops from the Weber twin side-draught carburettors. The exhaust ran clean and smoke-free, while oil pressure registered a healthy 70 PSI on cold start before settling smoothly as the engine warmed up.

The early-specification 1558cc Lotus Twin Cam engine is beautifully presented throughout, exhibiting an almost factory-fresh appearance under the bonnet.

The four-speed manual gearbox delivers short, precise throws through the floor-mounted lever, offering direct mechanical feedback as each gear engages. The clutch operates smoothly, with Mark reporting no issues.

Electrics and other

The car has benefited from an unrecorded restoration carried out in recent years, presenting as a major mechanical and structural build.

Mark tells us the overhaul encompasses a 1558cc Lotus Twin-Cam engine, a close-ratio gearbox, a heavy-duty propshaft, and early-specification suspension, along with complementary brake, body, and interior upgrades - a comprehensive conversion that would conservatively cost at least £30,000 + to replicate today.

History and paperwork

First registered in October 1963, the car began life as a two-door Cortina Deluxe. While the exact date of its transformation into Lotus specification is undocumented, the conversion is believed to have been carried out by a well-known Cortina enthusiast renowned for meticulous attention to detail.

Held in current ownership since November 2025, the car passed its MOT in March 2026 with no advisories, with coverage valid through March 2027. It remains both MOT-tested and officially exempt, as well as eligible for historic road tax exemption.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Suspension and brakes

The front suspension features shortened struts paired with forged control arms, while the rear retains the correct Lotus-specification arrangement of vertical coil springs, dampers, and twin trailing arms. The ride quality is quintessential Lotus Cortina: firm and poised, tracking predictably through corners while delivering clean, communicative feedback.

The braking system operates smoothly and effectively, pulling the car to a stop without judder, pull, or vibration. A minor, faint noise from the rear brakes cleared up completely after a few miles of driving, while the solid front discs provide positive bite and confident stopping power.

Steering wheel gear stick

An authentic riveted steering wheel and early-pattern gear lever anchor the cabin, both presenting in neat, well-maintained condition.
