The Appeal
The YB was the final development of the Y-Type saloon, distinguished from its YA predecessor by a front anti-roll bar and smaller 15-inch wheels. Ever-distinguished, if a little anachronistic by 1953, these upright-grilled sports saloons offered compact proportions, the celebrated XPAG engine, and rack-and-pinion steering designed by the legendary Alec Issigonis. The YB offered a rewarding driving experience that belied its modest proportions - but only 1,301 are known to have rolled out of Abingdon.
This 1953 example, finished in black and light green, has been in its current ownership since April 2018 and has received significant investment during that time. The owner carried out a body restoration and respray at a cost of over £21,000, with receipts available to support the work.
The interior and seats have also been restored, and a five-speed gearbox has been fitted to enhance the driving experience. The car's reliability was tested earlier this year when it completed a 1,700-mile MG Rally tour of France without any issues.
