Description
KEY FACTS
- A landmark post-war GT car, the Bentley R-Type Continental Fastback was the fastest four-seater production car in the world at its launch, designed for effortless cross-continental touring.
- This example is powered by a 4.6-litre straight-six engine, driving the rear wheels via a desirable four-speed manual transmission.
- It is finished in the original colour combination of Masons Black over Burgundy leather, with factory options including lightweight seats.
- The car was treated to an extensive cosmetic restoration around 10 years ago, including a bare-metal repaint and a full interior retrim.
- The odometer indicates 5,948 miles, though the total mileage from new is unverified.
EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES
- The R-Type Continental Fastback combined svelte coachbuilt bodywork by H.J. Mulliner with long-legged performance from its straight-six engine, capable of cruising at over 100mph.
- This R-Type is an original UK-market car, supplied via Charles Atwood & Son Ltd to a Mr Jenks. It was ordered in Masons Black with Burgundy hide trim, as well as with the optional lightweight seats and the manual gearbox.
- The interior is trimmed in Connolly Vaumol Burgundy leather (VM 3086), with the ‘bucket’ seats and refinished wood veneers.
- Equipment includes a manual floor-change gearbox, three-spoke steering wheel, Smiths instrument gauges, and a bespoke pull-out tray with four nested silver-plated tumblers.
- It is understood that the wheel spats were a later addition by a subsequent owner.
- Electric Power steering has also been added to enhance the car’s usability.
- The car is accompanied by factory build sheets and one ignition key.
CONDITION
- Please refer to the photo gallery to assess the exterior and interior condition.
- Specific notes from the seller include: a bare-metal repaint was completed in 2015 by P&T Coachworks, at a cost exceeding £37,000. The interior was retrimmed by Surrey Trimming in 2015, including a full leather upholstery renewal. All woodwork was meticulously restored by Silver Crest costing £5,832.
SERVICE HISTORY
- The last maintenance was carried out in June 2025 at an indicated 5,896 miles by DD Classics LTD, which comprised a general service.
- Recent mechanical work includes carburettor servicing, a fuel system clean, cylinder head overhaul, and radiator repairs by Padgett Motor Engineers totalling £16,404 in June 2024
- The most recent MOT test was on 9 March 2016 at an indicated 5,601 miles, which resulted in a first-time pass with no advisories. It is understood to be exempt from mandatory testing.
SUMMARY
This R-Type Continental Fastback is one of the most elegant and celebrated post-war Bentleys, presented in its factory specification with the addition of wheel spats and variable electric power steering to enhance its aesthetics and usability. Benefiting from substantial restoration work over the course of its life, and around 10 years ago in particular; this is a sought-after high-speed grand tourer that combines striking post-war design with wonderful hand-built craftsmanship.
