Description
A remarkably well-preserved example of the acclaimed E39-generation BMW 5 Series, combining one of BMW’s characteristically smooth straight-six engines with the added involvement of a manual gearbox.
Paint
The metallic silver paintwork retains an attractive, consistent-looking finish across the main panels.
It reflects well in the photographs and highlights the E39’s pronounced shoulder line, long bonnet and gently tapering rear bodywork. The overall appearance is that of a carefully preserved car rather than one that has been heavily restored or modified.
A small number of light age-related marks and minor blemishes can be seen upon close inspection, including marks around the front wing area. These appear limited and do not significantly detract from the BMW’s presentation.
The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.
Bodywork
The bodywork presents to a very good overall standard and retains the crisp, disciplined proportions that have helped the E39 age so gracefully.
The doors, bonnet and boot appear to sit correctly, with even-looking shut lines across the car. We did not notice any significant dents, deformation or obvious areas of accident damage during our visit.
The subtle side skirts and boot-lid spoiler complement the factory sports equipment without overwhelming the original design. The spoiler is especially discreet and is reported by Naqash to be an uncommon factory option.
Rear parking sensors are neatly incorporated into the bumper.
We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.
Dashboard
The dashboard retains BMW’s clear, driver-focused arrangement, with the centre controls angled subtly towards the driver.
Large analogue instruments display road speed, engine speed, fuel level and coolant temperature. The odometer showed ~72,393 miles during our visit.
The original BMW audio unit remains installed, together with the factory climate-control panel. The absence of an aftermarket entertainment system helps preserve the cabin’s period appearance.
Figured wood trim extends across the dashboard, doors and centre console. It adds warmth to the otherwise dark interior, although some deterioration and lifting of the lacquer or veneer is visible, particularly across the passenger side of the dashboard and around sections of the centre console. Prospective buyers should review the interior photographs for a closer assessment.
The switchgear, vents and surrounding plastics otherwise appear complete and presentable.
The drive
The E39’s enduring reputation rests largely on the way it combines refinement, comfort and genuine driver involvement.
The steering is described as communicative, giving the driver a clear sense of what the front wheels are doing. The chassis feels balanced and predictable, with enough compliance for everyday use while remaining composed through bends.
Unlike many modern performance-oriented saloons, the 523i does not rely upon excessive power or heavily filtered controls to create an enjoyable experience. Its appeal comes from the interaction between the straight-six engine, manual gearbox, rear-wheel drive and carefully judged suspension.
Naqash finds the car equally satisfying when cruising and when driven along a winding country road. This combination of comfort and involvement is a significant part of what has made the E39 so highly regarded among BMW enthusiasts.
Glass and trim
The glass appears clear throughout, with no obvious significant chips or cracks noted during our visit.
This pre-facelift example retains the original-style headlamps with twin circular lights positioned behind clear outer covers. The rear light units also remain in their correct early-E39 form and present well.
The kidney grilles, BMW roundels, 523i badging and remaining exterior trim appear complete.
A factory tilt-and-slide sunroof is fitted and adds welcome light to the predominantly black cabin.
The light lenses, fog lamps, mirrors, door furniture and other exterior fittings all look appropriately well preserved for the age of the car.
Please view the photos and video below to review the condition of the glass and trim for yourself.
Wheels and tyres
The BMW is fitted with its original Style 68 alloy wheels.
Their five-double-spoke design gives the car a sportier appearance without looking out of keeping with its understated executive-saloon character. All four wheels appear smart and presentable in the photographs, with no significant damage immediately apparent.
A matching alloy spare wheel is also retained, adding to the completeness and originality of the car.
The tyres appear to retain a usable level of tread.
Please take time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels, and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn, or over 10 years old.
Seats and carpets
The factory sports seats are trimmed in black leather and provide noticeably greater side support than the standard E39 chairs.
Both front seats retain their shape and bolstering well. The leather displays gentle creasing and a light sheen consistent with age and use, but no substantial tears or heavy damage.
The rear bench follows the same black leather finish and appears similarly well preserved. There is generous accommodation for passengers, reinforcing the 523i’s ability to function as a practical long-distance saloon as well as an engaging drivers' car.
Dark carpeting continues throughout the cabin and looks presentable, while the door cards retain their original leather inserts, bright handles and wood trim.
Please take a look at the photos and video below to decide on the condition of the seats and carpets for yourself.
Engine and gearbox
The 523i is powered by a 2,494cc straight-six engine producing a factory-quoted 170BHP.
As a later example, it uses the technically updated M52TU version of the engine, incorporating double-VANOS variable camshaft control. The emphasis is on smooth, flexible torque delivery rather than aggressive peak performance, making it particularly well suited to the E39’s refined character.
Naqash describes the engine as wonderfully smooth and refined. Its linear power delivery allows the car to make relaxed progress at lower speeds while retaining the willingness and distinctive sound traditionally associated with BMW’s naturally aspirated straight-six engines.
The engine bay presents honestly and appears notably complete. Factory covers, intake components and labels remain in place, with only ordinary signs of age visible around some fasteners and fittings.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual gearbox. Naqash reports that the manual transmission adds considerably to the driving experience and makes the car feel more engaging than an equivalent automatic example.
The accompanying mechanical video allows prospective buyers to hear the engine starting and running and to see the BMW being driven on the road.
Electrics and other
The car retains a useful selection of original equipment, including climate control, electric windows, multifunction steering-wheel controls, rear parking sensors and a factory sunroof.
No specific electrical faults have been reported by Naqash.
The warning lights visible in the instrument photograph were illuminated with the ignition switched on and the engine not running.
History and paperwork
No major engine or bodywork repairs have been required during Naqash’s ownership. He reports that the car remains completely original and unmodified, retaining its factory sports seats, M steering wheel, Style 68 alloy wheels, matching spare and boot-lid spoiler.
This represents an appealing opportunity to acquire an increasingly uncommon manual 523i that combines low indicated mileage, attractive factory sports equipment, recent specialist maintenance and the originality valued by knowledgeable BMW enthusiasts.
We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.
We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.
If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
Suspension and brakes
The E39 was notable for the extensive use of aluminium within its suspension, helping BMW reduce unsprung weight while maintaining the ride comfort expected from an executive saloon.
Its front double-pivot arrangement and integral rear axle were engineered to provide both accurate handling and strong stability at higher speeds.
Naqash describes the chassis as beautifully balanced, with communicative steering and an excellent compromise between ride quality and control. The car is comfortable enough for relaxed longer journeys while still feeling composed and involving on more demanding roads.
The BMW has recently undergone a thorough inspection by BM Sport. A brake-fluid change was completed during that visit, and the subsequent MOT was passed without defects or advisories.
No specific suspension, steering or braking concerns have been reported by Naqash.
Prospective buyers should watch the mechanical and on-the-road video for a closer impression of the car’s behaviour.
Steering wheel gear stick
A leather-trimmed M steering wheel is fitted and forms part of the car’s reported factory sports specification.
The multifunction controls are positioned within easy reach, while the relatively compact rim contributes to the more focused driving position. Some light polishing and age-related wear can be seen around the leather, but it remains in good usable condition.
There is some visible wear to the gear knob and surrounding wood trim, consistent with the car’s age.
