The Appeal

The Alfa Romeo Montreal is one of the 1970s' most distinctive grand tourers. Replacing the 2600 Sprint, a model with its roots stuck firmly in the 1950s, the Montreal was thoroughly modern, while based around Alfa's legendary 105 Series platform. Its beautiful design was inspired by Bertone's stunning 1967 Expo concept, and propulsion came courtesy of a race-derived 2.6-litre V8 with SPICA mechanical fuel injection.
With fewer than 4,000 built, fine examples are increasingly sought after by collectors.

Our Montreal, chassis AR1428677, was manufactured in 1970 and supplied in 1975 through Alfa Romeo's agents in Frankfurt for the German market. Its provenance is confirmed by the Centro Documentazione Alfa Romeo, which issued a Certificate of Origin verifying the chassis number, original specification, and delivery details. After a period in Germany and then approximately eight years in Denmark, the car was acquired by its previous owner in 2013.

What followed was a ground-up restoration spanning four years, with the body stripped to bare metal, the engine and running gear rebuilt by marque specialists, and the cabin fully retrimmed. Parts were sourced from respected specialist suppliers, including Classic Alfa UK, Bertesbeck, AMS, and OKP in Germany. The entire process was photographed and documented with invoices, providing a thorough record of the work undertaken.

  • All removed parts cleaned, repaired, painted, polished, or chromed as required

As the photographs attest, this Alfa Romeo has undergone a meticulous restoration, during which no area was overlooked. The seller has provided detailed photographic evidence of the work in progress, as well as some excellent images of the underside post-restoration, showing the extent to which this car has been apart, refinished, and rebuilt. Included in the gallery are a vast number of invoices for parts and services rendered by a specialist. It's abundantly clear that anything this car has needed, it has received.

The Mechanics

  • 2.6-litre (2,593cc) V8 engine with SPICA mechanical fuel injection
  • Five-speed manual gearbox
  • Engine rebuilt by Iversens Cylinderservice with new pistons, bearings, cylinder parts, timing chain, and water pump
  • SPICA fuel injection system, ignition system, and intake manifold rebuilt by specialist Montreal workshop Burgi Automobile GmbH, Switzerland
  • Suspension rebuilt with new ball joints, trailing arms, springs, and shock absorbers
  • Gearbox and differential repaired and serviced
  • Electrical wiring removed, serviced, repaired, replaced, and tested prior to reinstallation

The Montreal used Alfa Romeo's own V8 derived directly from the Tipo 33 racing car and the 33 Stradale. With SPICA fuel injection and dry-sump lubrication, European-delivered cars made ~200 horsepower. Our car has undergone a comprehensive mechanical rebuild, which also extended to the electrical system. We're informed that its mechanical systems are in very good health, resulting in a car that's as good to drive as it is to look at.
