Description
One of the first models released under the ownership of Ferrari, the 4200GT was the perfect mix of Italian styling and performance from two of the biggest players in Italy.
Paint
Generally the Maserati is in good overall condition with just some odd age related chips here and there, such as the door edges and stone chips to the front. There is some paint that looks to have cracked, possibly caused by the bumper flexing, and to the driver’s side corner there is some paint missing.
It would definitely benefit from a machine polish to remove some of the swirl marks that tend to build up over the years, and which are particularly noticeable on black cars.
Please see the image gallery for more detailed shots.
Bodywork
Walking around the car, the panel gaps for the doors, boot and bonnet look as they should. There is a slight crease to the top of the driver's side rear quarter. It looks like something may have fallen on it at some point, but it might be able to be removed by a paintless dent removal specialist. This of course would need to be inspected by them first.
The convertible roof is in very good visual condition and closes up nice and tight. Chris did mention that sometimes you do have to give a little helping hand pulling the roof to close for the last couple of inches.
Please see the gallery for more detailed images.
Dashboard
The dash is covered top to bottom with leather which is all in good condition with no obvious signs of wear to it. The instruments are all working correctly and there were no fault lights showing at the time of our visit. The odometer has a reading of ~53,735 miles.
The black plastic trim for the steering wheel surround, air vents and centre console has started to go a little soft and scratched as is quite often seen on Maseratis of this age.
Please have a look at the photos and video provided in the media pack for a detailed view.
The drive
Driving an Italian sports car is a very enjoyable experience - Chris had many lovely drives throughout his six-year ownership.
Chris reports no issues, all you have to do is sit back, relax and enjoy your time with this Maserati Spyder Cambiocorsa.
Glass and trim
The glass is all nice and clean with no obvious scratches to mention. The windscreen and side windows all look to be in good condition. There are some scratches to the plastic window in the roof which is often the case.
The lights to the front and rear are all in good condition with no splits or cracks.
Wheels and tyres
The wheels are generally in good condition with just an odd scuff and chip to the rims on all four corners. Nothing too drastic for your local alloy wheel refurbisher to handle.
The tyres are all in good condition. The front ones are slightly older than the rears and do have some slight wear to the outer edge.
Please have a look at the photos provided in the media pack below for a detailed view.
Seats and carpets
Importantly the seats are original but they do have some wear to them, the main area being the driver’s bolster. There is also some cracking to the leather over both seats. On the passenger seat it does look to have had something hot on there at some point which has affected the inside edge of the squab.
The carpets throughout the passenger area look to be in good condition, with no real signs of wear. There are two sets of mats fitted. The lower ones are a similar colour to the carpet, and then to keep those clean, a black set is fitted over the top.
The boot area is nice and clean, with the Maserati tool kit in place along with a can of Quick Fix Tyre Repair in place of a spare wheel.
Engine and gearbox
The V8 fires up straight away and sounds fantastic, as you would expect with a Ferrari / Maserati designed engine. Chris reports that there are no noises creeping in that shouldn't be there. A recent service at 52,868 miles ensures that the car is ready for its new owner.
The gearbox in the Cambiocorsa, (meaning 'race change' in Italian), is an automated manual gearbox, which uses a Formula One style gearbox operated by two F1 style paddles behind the steering wheel to shift up and down. This is all working as it should.
Electrics and other
There are some things to mention regarding the car. The satnav comes up with an error about the voice control and states that it needs the disc reinserting. The disc does come with the car, so this might rectify this issue.
The switches in the car have suffered the same to their finish as the air vents and centre console, but they are all reported to be working correctly.
The final thing is that the button to open the boot in the glove box is not working, you have to release the boot from the remote.
You can see more detailed images in the photography sections.
History and paperwork
The Maserati Spyder is registered as a CAT D after an unfortunate incident with a kerb. Chris took the car out and spun it. It hit a kerb on the driver’s side front wheel, which damaged the suspension. Doing so also set off the airbag. This is where the insurers decided to write off the car because the parts were taking so long to get from Maserati. Chris bought the car back and had it repaired.
There are a healthy number of receipts and invoices for the car. The owners manuals are present along with the navigation discs and service manual.
We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and the vehicle is HPI clear with just the CAT D showing.
Suspension and brakes
The front suspension has been replaced following an incident with a kerb, more on that in the history section. The most recent MOT has mentioned some surface corrosion to the brake pipes, which would need addressing in the future.
The brake discs look to be in good order, with no lip to the edges of the discs. They are reported by the owner to stop the car nice and straight with no brake judder.
Steering wheel gear stick
The steering wheel is in nice condition with just a little age related wear, as are the paddle shifts which are sitting just behind.
