Description
A refined, reliable Japanese sports coupé blending sleek styling and comfort.
Paint
The black paint finish retains a consistent tone across all panels. While light swirl marks are visible in direct light and a few light storage scuffs affect the boot lid, a professional machine polish would easily restore the shine.
The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.
Bodywork
The bodywork is in good condition, featuring consistent panel gaps, even alignment, and no significant damage. All doors open and close with ease. A small area of micro-cracking is visible on the nearside rear arch, alongside a small and treatable dent on the offside rear wing near the bumper, but the overall appearance reflects a well-looked-after vehicle.
The underside is in sound order, with no issues noted across the floor pan, suspension mounts, or chassis rails. The engine bay and wheel wells remain solid throughout.
We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.
Dashboard
The dashboard is in excellent condition, showing minimal wear or scuffing.
The switches, fascia, centre console, and controls are exceptionally well preserved. The electric sunroof, power windows, indicators, and heater blowers were tested and function correctly.
The headlining, door cards, and cabin trim remain in good order. While the boot plastics exhibit light wear, the area overall presents very well.
The drive
The Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI) system combined electronic fuel injection with VTEC variable valve timing. Developed through Honda's Formula 1 racing program, PGM-FI transformed the Prelude from a modest commuter coupe into a high-revving, high-performance sports car. As a digital multipoint sequential fuel injection system, PGM-FI enabled Honda engines to achieve optimal combustion, crisp throttle response, and low emissions without sacrificing top-end power.
While electronic fuel injection on competing cars was notoriously finicky during this era, PGM-FI was celebrated for its exceptional reliability. At low engine speeds, it ensured smooth, docile behaviour for daily driving. Once above the VTEC crossover point, the system instantly adapted to the massive intake of air and fuel, allowing the engine to pull cleanly all the way to its redline beyond 7,400 RPM.
Under the bonnet of the BB3 model sits the 2.0-litre (1,997 cc) 16-valve Single Overhead Camshaft (SOHC) engine. Unlike older H-series engines, this unit utilises traditional cast-iron cylinder sleeves. This design makes the engine block exceptionally durable, significantly reduces the risk of excessive oil consumption, and provides a strong foundation for forced induction if the owner decides to add a turbocharger.
We were limited to minimal manoeuvring of the car, but the engine ran smoothly throughout our visit. We left it running for 20 minutes with no adverse effects, free from dashboard warning lights, stalling, misfires, or unusual noises.
Given that the car was likely last driven properly several years ago, we would recommend a mechanical inspection and service to ensure the engine upholds Honda's exceptional reputation for reliability.
Glass and trim
The glass and seals are in good condition, and the exterior trim is securely fitted throughout. All lights and lenses remain in good order.
The bumpers display light scuffs and marks from minor impacts, while the rear spoiler shows a few light surface marks.
Wheels and tyres
The 14-inch five-spoke alloy wheels have minor kerb scuffs on the front rims, but they present well overall.
The front is fitted with Cooper tyres and the rear with Goodyears, all in size 195/65. Although they hold air and retain plenty of tread, they are over 20 years old and exhibit slight sidewall cracking.
Please take time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels, and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn, or over 10 years old.
Seats and carpets
The fabric seats are in excellent condition, showing no significant wear or signs of dampness. The carpets are complete, tidy, and similarly free from moisture.
Engine and gearbox
The car starts immediately with no warning lights displayed on the dashboard. The engine idles smoothly and runs quietly without any unusual noises, while the exhaust operates without excessive smoke, though the unit shows some age. A spare exhaust is included with the vehicle.
The engine bay is tidy, with hoses and ancillaries in good condition, and no fluid leaks were observed. The cambelt was renewed at 48,009 miles.
Although a road test was not possible due to the vehicle's SORN status and lack of an MOT, the transmission engages smoothly. The clutch offers a strong biting point, allowing smooth low-speed manoeuvring up the driveway incline without difficulty.
Electrics and other
The car remains completely standard, offering the next owner the choice to keep it as a superbly clean, original example or use it as a solid base for a performance build.
History and paperwork
First registered in October 1994 by Honda main dealer Elite Motors in London, the car was kept by its first owner for three years before being purchased in 1997 by Geraldine via Greystoke Honda of Aylesbury, with around 26,000 miles displayed on the odometer. Geraldine has retained all paperwork and receipts since acquiring the vehicle, mostly covering maintenance alongside a couple of invoices dating back to 1996. The service history shows ten services, with the most recent oil change carried out around 2,000 miles ago. Its last MOT expired in October 2020.
The car comes with its full book pack in the original leather wallet, two sets of keys, the 1997 Honda sales invoice, previous MOT certificates, old V5 logbooks, and a touch-up pen. A spare exhaust pipe is also included with the sale. As the car currently lacks a valid MOT, transport by trailer to its new home is recommended.
We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.
We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.
If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
Suspension and brakes
The suspension remained quiet while manoeuvring the car over the driveway and kerbs, and the components appear to be in good physical condition.
The brakes operate smoothly, free from any squeals or grinding noises.
Steering wheel gear stick
The steering wheel and gear lever match the overall good condition of the cabin.
