The Appeal
We miss the days of elegant Italian sporting coupés, because there were so many great cars to choose from. Alfa Romeo gave us the 105 Series, Lancia contributed the Fulvia, and Fiat gave the world the 124.
The Fiat 124 Sport Coupé is one of the most elegant Fiat products of the late 1960s. Powered by the exquisite Lampredi twin-cam engine and equipped with a then-advanced five-speed manual gearbox, it offered genuine sporting credentials in a beautifully proportioned, lightweight two-door body. First-series examples such as this 1968 car are the ones enthusiasts are after.
Our car stands out for its remarkable originality. The vendor reports that no welding or panel replacements have ever been carried out, and the bodywork, repainted in the 1980s, is said to still be in good condition. Inside, the seats and carpets are reported to be original, and mechanically the vendor states it starts readily and drives well.
Kept by one family from new until 2016, the car was subsequently purchased from Italy and driven back to the UK from Rome. The current owner has enjoyed it for approximately six years during the spring and summer months. Accompanying the car is a set of documentation including the original bookpack, service book, and period literature, along with bills, invoices, and a copy of its magazine feature. An age-appropriate Motorola stereo and a fifth alloy wheel with tyre are also included.
