Description
A time-capsule 1969 Lotus Elan S4, single-family owned since 1972 and stored since 1979. While the factory orange paint naturally exhibits a heavy layer of storage dust and age-related patina, the finish remains remarkably consistent throughout with no notable colour mismatch. The underlying gel coat presents well and appears free from significant cracking. Despite a few minor fractures and age blemishes, the body looks impressive given its decades in long-term storage. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint. The fibreglass panels appear remarkably straight, showing no signs of major impact or structural degradation - a testament to the car’s good condition before it was laid up. While the driver’s door, bonnet, and boot lid all open and close smoothly, the passenger door is currently seized, which is likely due to a faulty lock mechanism. The underside is straight, and while the main components were previously treated with a rust inhibitor, any exposed metal now shows surface rust. The wheel wells are in decent shape, and both the engine bay and boot floor appear solid: however, a thorough cleaning and closer inspection will be required to verify their exact condition. We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves. The dashboard moulding is in good condition and free from cracks. The wood veneer is complete and presents well, exhibiting only a few minor fractures that do not detract from its overall appearance. While the switches and controls show signs of age, they are in remarkably good cosmetic shape for a vehicle that has been idle for decades. However, none of the electrical functions could be tested. The door cards and interior trim are complete and securely mounted, though some elements show wear. Lastly, the centre console padding remains in good condition. The Lotus Elan S4 promises a legendary driving experience, pairing direct, precise steering with a free-revving 1.6-L twin-cam engine and exceptional handling. As a classic investment, it benefits from excellent specialist parts support and steady value appreciation. At its heart is the iconic Lotus-Ford Twin Cam engine - one of sports car history's greatest powerplants. By topping a rugged Ford cast-iron block with a high-flowing, aluminium dual-overhead-cam (DOHC) cylinder head, Lotus created a free-revving masterpiece that delivers an incredible power-to-weight advantage. The windscreen and seals appear to be in good condition, and the door glass shows no significant issues. While the condition of the headlamps couldn't be verified, the remaining lights and lenses are in good shape. The trim shows signs of age but remains complete and securely mounted. Similarly, the bumpers show wear but are strong candidates for restoration. The steel wheels are aged from disuse, but remain salvageable for restoration. Although the Dunlop tyres are over 50 years old, the vendor believes 3 should hold enough air to facilitate moving the vehicle. One will almost certainly not. Please take time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels, and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn, or over 10 years old. The seats remain in good condition, suggesting they were well cared for before storage. While the cabin carpets show their age, they appear dry. The boot carpeting, however, will require replacement. The engine has not been turned over since the vehicle was laid up; therefore, it should be assumed that a complete rebuild is required. While the engine components show typical signs of age consistent with the car's long-term storage, excellent parts availability means sourcing components will be a highly rewarding task for an enthusiast. Please note that the steering lock key could not be located, so we were unable to test the clutch operation or verify the gear selections. The next owner will need to break the lock to free the steering wheel. The convertible top is easily removable, and the fabric itself remains in good condition, although the plastic windows have lost their transparency over time. Additionally, the car comes with a selection of spare servicing parts. First registered in August 1969, this Lotus was purchased by the current registered keeper in 1972 at just three years old, remaining in the same family for over 54 years. While regularly enjoyed early on, the car saw less use following the arrival of Graham’s family. However, he couldn't part with it, even moving it to a new home in 1984, where it has remained safely dry stored and unused ever since. The vehicle is accompanied by a detailed history from the 1970s, including numerous parts invoices and MOT certificates leading up to its long-term storage. Notably, Graham kept a meticulous logbook documenting the car’s mileage, maintenance, and history from the day he bought it. The paperwork includes the original 1972 sales invoice and a classic V5 document. While the car is not currently active on the DVLA database, reclaiming the registration should be a straightforward process using the (provided) original V5. We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check. We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming. If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house. While the suspension components show surface rust, they appear structurally sound and salvageable. The brakes have seized, so the next owner will need to account for this when arranging transport for the vehicle. The steering wheel presents well and just needs a deep clean, while the wooden gear knob is complete; though it has lost its lustre.
