Description
KEY FACTS
- This E9-generation BMW 3.0 CSL is a rare homologation-special grand tourer, presented in desirable right-hand-drive ‘City Package’ specification.
- It is powered by a fuel-injected 3.0-litre straight-six, driving the rear wheels via a retrofitted five-speed manual transmission.
- Chassis number 2285119 identifies this example as one of the 500 right-hand-drive, fuel-injected 3.0 CSLs produced for the UK market.
- This example was reportedly comprehensively restored in the late 1990s, including the fitment of numerous replacement body panels and a bare-metal respray.
- In 2009, marque specialist Munich Legends carried out a comprehensive mechanical overhaul, undersealed the car, and fitted its five-speed close-ratio ‘dogleg’ gearbox and air conditioning.
- The odometer indicates 40,835 miles, which the seller believes to be the genuine total.
EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES
- The 3.0 CSL was developed as a lightweight homologation version of BMW’s elegant E9 coupe, with the fuel-injected right-hand-drive cars produced in a more generously equipped ‘City Package’ specification.
- This example is finished in the appealing shade of Fjord Blue with contrasting black ‘3.0 CSL’ side decals, over a re-trimmed black leather and corduroy cloth-trimmed interior, punctuated by satin-silver, chrome, and wood veneer trim.
- It rides on a set of 14-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels fitted with Uniroyal RainExpert 3 tyres.
- Equipment includes a heated rear screen, a three-spoke steering wheel, an analogue clock, Scheel-style sports bucket seats, electric windows, a wooden gear knob, air conditioning, VDO gauges, a limited-slip differential, and twist-out front quarter light windows.
- This example has been fitted with a retro-style modern stereo.
- A five-speed close-ratio ‘dogleg’ manual gearbox was retrofitted by Munich Legends in 2009, replacing the original transmission and adding an extra ratio for greater usability.
- The car is accompanied by two keys, a collection of maintenance and parts invoices, its tool kit and original registration documentation.
CONDITION
- Please refer to the photo gallery to assess the exterior and interior condition.
- Specific notes from the seller include: the car underwent a major restoration in the late 1990s, during which genuine parts were reportedly used wherever possible, including numerous body panels, before the body received a bare-metal respray. The car was fully undersealed by Munich Legends in 2009. The interior was re-trimmed in 2024.
- The most recent MOT test was on 9 May 2019 at an indicated 39,209 miles, which resulted in a first-time pass with no advisories. It is understood to be exempt from mandatory testing on the basis of age.
SERVICE HISTORY
- The last recorded maintenance was carried out in May 2025 at an indicated 40,713 miles by Hero Motor Company, which consisted of an engine oil and filter change, the radiator being rebuilt, the brake fluid and gearbox oil being changed, the differential oil renewed, new spark plugs, a new HT lead rail, a replacement window switch, two new armrests, a replacement window motor, new differential oil seals, an R134A air conditioning conversion, a new battery, various replacement seals and gaskets, a replacement S/H fan clutch, a new voltage regulator, and the alternator being rebuilt.
- The car underwent a comprehensive mechanical overhaul by marque specialist Munich Legends in 2009. The same period of work included undersealing the car and installing its five-speed close-ratio ‘dogleg’ gearbox and air conditioning.
SUMMARY
This BMW 3.0 CSL is a particularly appealing example of the marque’s celebrated E9 homologation special, combining its lightweight-focused engineering with the additional usability of the right-hand-drive ‘City Package’. It reportedly benefits from a late-1990s restoration, as well as documented subsequent specialist attention and a five-speed gearbox conversion. Presented in classic Fjord Blue metallic and accompanied by invoices and tools, it should make an engaging addition to a collection of significant BMWs, remaining well-suited to weekend drive and classic car show visits.
