Description

Background:

Introduced in 2001, the R230-generation Mercedes-Benz SL combined the traditional appeal of the marque's flagship two-seat roadster with a folding metal roof, extensive electronic systems and sophisticated chassis technology. At the top of the range sat the SL65 AMG, powered by AMG's 5,980cc twin-turbocharged V12 producing 612bhp and 1,000Nm of torque. Drive was transmitted to the rear wheels through a five-speed automatic transmission, whilst AMG-specific suspension, braking and chassis developments helped accommodate the considerable performance available.

The later SL65 AMG Black Series took the concept considerably further, gaining significantly wider bodywork, extensive weight-saving measures and a substantial increase in performance. Produced in limited numbers, it has since become one of the most recognisable AMG models of the period.

The Car:

On offer here is a genuine 2005 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG that has subsequently been externally converted to Black Series-style specification. Crucially, beneath the bodywork remains the original SL65 AMG drivetrain, with its 6.0-litre twin-turbocharged V12 producing 612bhp and 1,000Nm of torque.

Finished in Obsidian Black, the conversion incorporates the wider Black Series-style bodywork and appropriate AMG alloy wheels, whilst the exterior is further protected by full Paint Protection Film (PPF). The factory specification includes Exclusive Nappa leather, burr walnut trim and active ventilated multi-contour seats with memory function. Further equipment includes the panoramic glass Vario-roof with retractable sunshade, Bi-Xenon headlights, COMAND DVD-based satellite navigation, Keyless-Go and Bose cabin surround sound.

The accompanying history file includes a number of invoices relating specifically to the conversion, and details the approximately £34,100 that's been invested on the conversion and maintenance of the car during past ownership.

The documented history includes:

  • April 2007 – Maintenance service at 14,615 miles – Mercedes-Benz
  • May 2008 – Supagard paint protection and interior detail – Auto Audio Installations
  • July 2008 – Maintenance service at 18,219 miles – Mercedes-Benz
  • February 2012 – Wiper replacement – Mercedes-Benz
  • February 2012 – Suspension leak repair – Auto Audio Installations
  • April 2012 – Battery replacement – Auto Audio Installations
  • April 2012 – MOT – Auto Audio Installations
  • December 2012 – Alloy wheel refurbishment – Auto Audio Installations
  • July 2018 – Fuel pump and fuel filter – Auto Audio Installations
  • August 2018 – MOT – Auto Audio Installations
  • February 2022 – Condenser, radiator, front suspension, air suspension and brakes at 55,175 miles – White Rose Motors
  • February 2022 – Air pump, relay, PCV valve and water pump – White Rose Motors
  • February 2022 – Engine vacuum pipes at 55,175 miles – White Rose Motors
  • January 2026 – Oil service, air filter, pollen filter and drive belt at 55,247 miles – Bradshaw Bentley Services
  • May 2026 – Oil service, MOT, RAC 86-point inspection and health check

The work carried out by White Rose Motors in 2022 was extensive and included attention to the cooling system, suspension, brakes and a number of engine ancillaries. More recently, Bradshaw Bentley Services serviced the car in January 2026 at 55,247 miles, including engine oil, air and pollen filters and the drive belt. This was followed in May 2026 by a further oil service and MOT, together with an RAC 86-point inspection and health check. At the time of cataloguing, the odometer indicated a little over 55,000 miles.

Condition:

Finished in Obsidian with the wider Black Series-style bodywork, the car has a substantially more purposeful appearance than the standard SL65, however, the interior retains the original SL65's more luxurious character, with Exclusive Nappa leather, burr walnut trim and extensive factory equipment. The exterior is protected by full Paint Protection Film (PPF).

With previous ownership dating back to August 2007, approximately £34,100 reportedly invested in its conversion and maintenance, a substantial accompanying history file and just over 55,000 miles indicated, this is a distinctive example of the V12-powered SL65 AMG, however, it should be noted that DK05 NXY is a genuine 2005 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG that has subsequently been converted to Black Series-style cosmetic specification and is not a factory-built SL65 AMG Black Series.
