Description

Background:
Developed as a homologation model for rally competition, the Mazda 323 Familia GT-R was engineered to showcase the marque’s performance credentials on both road and stage. Built around a turbocharged 1.8-litre inline-four engine and a capable four-wheel drive system, the GT-R combined compact dimensions with impressive performance. Distinctive styling features, including an aggressive front spoiler, prominent auxiliary driving lights, a vented bonnet and a roof spoiler, set it apart from standard models. Today, the GT-R is regarded as an engaging and characterful example of Japan’s 1990s performance engineering.

The Car:
This example was imported and first registered in the United Kingdom in 2003 and has reportedly been in the care of its current owner for the past nine years. The odometer indicated 72,070 miles at the time of photography, although this is not warranted.

Finished in Brilliant Black (PX/PZ) complemented by a black leather and synthetic suede-trimmed interior, detailed with red stitching and red perforated inserts on the door cards and rear seats. The original front seats have been replaced with Mazdaspeed items trimmed in black leather with blue cloth inserts and embroidered logos.

Externally, the car sits on 17-inch Speedline multi-spoke alloy wheels in gloss anthracite, housing AP Racing front brake callipers and fitted with mixed tyres. The specification includes air conditioning, electrically operated windows and mirrors, a rear screen wiper and a digital clock.

This GT-R has been enhanced with a number of considered upgrades, including a front fog light air intake scoop, Alcantara-trimmed Sparco steering wheel, Walbro 345 high-pressure fuel pump, Apexi AVCR boost controller, HKS turbo boost gauge, an intercooler sourced from an R33 Skyline GT-R, AP Racing front brakes, GReddy triple-plate clutch, HKS dump valve, upgraded ignition leads, Alpine stereo system with amplifier and aftermarket speakers, additional HKS gauges in the driver’s footwell, Cusco front strut brace, and an aftermarket hard-pipe intake system.

The car is accompanied by its V5C registration document and recent MOT certificates, including the one from 29/03/2025 at an indicated 71,968 miles, resulting in a first-time pass with no advisories. We understand it will have a fresh MOT at the time of the sale. One ignition key is present.

Specific notes from the seller include minor scratches on the bumper from storage, and confirmation that the original front seats have been replaced. Please refer to the photo gallery to assess the exterior and interior condition.

Summary:

This Mazda 323 Familia GT-R is a characterful and engaging example of a homologation-special Japanese hot hatch, offered from long-term ownership and enhanced with a range of performance-focused upgrades. Combining compact proportions with four-wheel drive capability and turbocharged performance, it represents an appealing addition to any collection of modern classics and offers an involving driving experience suited to both weekend use and enthusiast events.
