The Appeal
For Alfisti, we suspect there will be only one reaction to this Alfetta GTV: wow.
Genuine British Saloon Car Championship machinery rarely comes to market. Genuine Alfa Romeo Dealer Team machinery is rarer still. Add nearly five decades of competition history, a Goodwood Members' Meeting appearance and a stint in the hands of Richard Attwood, and you begin to understand why this Alfa stands apart from the crowd.
First registered in October 1975, this Alfetta GTV joined the Alfa Romeo Dealer Team and competed in the British Saloon Car Championship between 1977 and 1979, raced during that period by Jon Dooley and Rob Kirby. It was a time when saloon car racing was gloriously competitive, fiercely contested and packed with character, and the Alfetta played its part in one of the most entertaining eras of British motorsport.
Its racing career didn't end when its BSCC duties were over. The Alfa continued to compete in Alfa Romeo Owners Club Championship events before eventually passing into the ownership of enthusiast Stephen Chase. Remarkably, Chase would retain the car for around four decades, preserving and campaigning it while maintaining its identity as an authentic competition machine.
The car was restored during the early 2000s and returned to active historic motorsport use. More recently, it earned an invitation to the Gerry Marshall Trophy at the 72nd Goodwood Members' Meeting, one of the most sought-after grids in historic racing. There, the Alfa was shared between its owner and Richard Attwood, winner of the 1970 Le Mans 24 Hours, adding yet another chapter to an already fascinating story.
Today, the Alfetta wears its striking Napolina livery, a look that has become synonymous with the car during its more recent historic racing career. Whether sitting in the paddock or charging through a pack of touring cars, it has exactly the sort of presence enthusiasts hope for from a period competition Alfa Romeo.
Importantly, this is not merely an interesting historic racing car. It is an Alfa with documented British Saloon Car Championship history and eligibility for many of the UK's most desirable historic racing series and events.
Cars with this combination of provenance, character and usability simply do not appear very often.
History & Provenance
The accompanying history file documents an extensive competition career spanning decades and includes period photographs, race documentation, restoration records, event paperwork, MOT certificates and tax discs.
The file traces the car's journey from its British Saloon Car Championship career through subsequent competition use and into the historic motorsport scene, where it remains a familiar and respected machine.
One point worth mentioning concerns the car's construction history. Historical descriptions have stated that the Alfetta was re-shelled at some point during its competition life and subsequently appeared in a number of different racing liveries before adopting its current Napolina colours.
While this information has been referenced previously, no specific documentation relating to the reported re-shelling has been identified within the accompanying history file. Bidders should make their own assessment.
The Specification
The Alfetta remains configured as a proper historic competition car and features:
* Roll cage
* Competition bucket seat
* TRS racing harness
* Momo Prototipo steering wheel
* Fire extinguisher system
* Kill switches
* Brake bias adjustment
* Competition instrumentation
* Rain light
* 14-inch alloy wheels fitted with Dunlop Formula-R Sport tyres
Power comes from Alfa Romeo's much-loved 2.0-litre twin-cam four-cylinder engine, driving the rear wheels through a five-speed manual gearbox. Few engines better capture the spirit of 1970s touring car racing, combining a distinctive soundtrack with a willingness to rev that helped establish Alfa Romeo's sporting reputation.
Condition
Presented in honest historic racing condition, the Alfetta wears the signs of a life spent doing exactly what it was built to do.
The Napolina livery remains vibrant and eye-catching, while minor stone chips and cosmetic marks are consistent with active historic motorsport use. The interior is purposeful and authentic, retaining the character one would hope to find in a genuine long-term competition machine.
Prospective bidders should note that the TRS harnesses have reached their expiry date and may require replacement before future competitive use.
Summary
A genuine Alfa Romeo Dealer Team British Saloon Car Championship racer with period competition history, long-term enthusiast ownership, extensive documentation and appearances at some of the UK's most prestigious historic motorsport events, this Alfetta GTV represents a rare opportunity to acquire a significant piece of Alfa Romeo competition history.
Whether destined for the paddock, the circuit or a serious Alfa collection, it offers the sort of provenance, character and eligibility that enthusiasts spend years searching for.
