The Appeal

The Vauxhall VX220 Turbo took the stiff, aluminium chassis from the Lotus Elise and stuck a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine in it. It's a pretty simple brief, but what an effective one. This gave the VX220 a combination of lightweight agility and strong straight-line performance - 0-60 mph in 4.7 seconds and a 930kg kerb weight, with over 195bhp on tap. A perfect driver's car for the thrill-seeking motorist, and one that remains ever-charismatic and soul-stirring some twenty years later.

This 2006-registered example has been enhanced with a range of modifications, many of which any enthusiast would swear by. A Courtenay Stage 2 remap, 3-inch Tullet exhaust system, Pro Alloy charge cooler, under-driven pulley kit, and VXR Turbo upgrade form the powertrain enhancements, while Gaz coilovers, Goodridge braided brake hoses, and replacement inner and outer rear toe links address the chassis.
